CYO visits the beautiful state of Jalisco, Mexico, the birthplace of it’s country’s emblematic drink of choice, Tequila. Our first stop was Rancho Tequila La Joya located in Betania, Jalisco. Fernando Cordero, Exports Manager and our personal tour guide drove us through the red rich soil of the acclaimed Los Altos de Jalisco, the state of Jalisco’s high lands. The scenic route was adorned with endless fields of agave up and across countless hillsides. The Blue Agave Tequilana Webber, who’s name is known by few, is distinguished for it’s true blue color. “ El azul del agave se confunde con el azul del cielo ” is a common phrase we heard amongst the people, the blue of the agave could easily be confused with the blue sky. Rancho Tequila La Joya is accurately represented by its name, for it is a true gem. There we learned the intricate and beautiful art form of how to make Tequila. Agave crop, jima, cooking, milling, fermentation, distillation, aging and bottling. We then met Juan, a Jimador who allowed us to jimar an agave. Much easier said than done. Our travels took us to the low lands of Jalisco and toured Las Juntas Tequila Distillery, home of award winning Amanecer Ranchera, 5150 and Blue Head Tequila. We couldn’t miss the Tequila Jose Cuervo Tour in the town of Tequila and in Arandas we privately toured Tequila Casadores.
